NO poverty

The Varsity Film Expo supports the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063, Africa’s masterplan for sustainable development and economic growth. The theme “No Poverty: From Awareness to Action” highlights the interconnected nature of the global goals, emphasising how poverty eradication has a ripple effect on achieving broader sustainable development. The theme challenges filmmakers to create content which motivates action towards sustainable development.

poverty and sustainable development:

SDG 1: No Poverty

The #VFX2024 theme anchors around SDG1, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. The theme addresses the fundamental goal of eliminating poverty as a critical step towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Poverty is a significant barrier to accessing healthcare. The theme promotes better health outcomes and well-being. Poverty reduction leads to improved living conditions, reducing the spread of diseases and improving overall health.

SDG 5: Gender Equality

Poverty disproportionately affects women and girls. Addressing poverty leads to greater gender equality by providing women with more opportunities for education, employment, and economic participation. Efforts to reduce poverty can also address gender-based disparities and promote equal rights.

SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Addressing poverty is crucial for achieving zero hunger. Poverty is a primary cause of food insecurity, and efforts to reduce poverty can lead to improved access to nutritious food. Reducing poverty empowers communities to invest in sustainable agricultural practices, thereby contributing to food security.

SDG 4: Quality Education

Poverty often limits access to education. Educated individuals are better equipped to break the cycle of poverty and contribute to their communities' growth.

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Poor communities often lack access to clean water and sanitation. Poverty alleviation efforts can improve infrastructure and access to these essential services. Improved water and sanitation directly impact health outcomes, reducing poverty-related health issues.
